What is cloud hosting actually? The word 'cloud' appears to be quite trendy in today's IT, World Wide Web and web hosting jargon. Even so, only a select few in fact are informed about what cloud hosting is. Perhaps it is a good idea to educate yourself about cloud hosting services. To make a very lengthy tale concise, we will first acquaint you with what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Restricted to a Remote File Storage Exclusively.

1. Supplying a remote disk storage solution, which involves one single data storage tool for all clients, does not turn any particular provider into a genuine cloud hosting services provider.

The cPanel hosting companies call the ability to provide remote file storage solutions a cloud hosting solution. Until now there is nothing bad about the cloud classification, but... we are discussing website hosting solutions, not remote file storage solutions for individual or business needs. There's constantly one "but", isn't there? It's not enough to dub a shared web hosting solution, based on a one-server hosting platform, exactly like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" solution. That's because the other constituents of the entire hosting platform must be functioning in precisely the same way - this does not refer only to the remote file storage. The rest of the services involved in the entire hosting procedure also must be remote, isolated and "clouded". And that's really problematical. A very meager number of hosting providers can actually make it.

2. It Involves Domain Names, E-mail Box Accounts, Databases, FTPs, Hosting CPs, etc.

Cloud hosting is not limited to a remote file storage solely. We are talking about a hosting solution, serving multiple domain names, online portals, mail accounts, and so on, right?

To name a hosting service a "cloud hosting" one requires a lot more than delivering simply remote data storage mounts (or maybe servers). The email server(s) need to be dedicated solely to the mail linked services. Executing nothing different than these specific procedures. There might be just one single or probably an entire group of mail servers, depending on the overall server load created. To have an actual cloud hosting solution, the remote database servers should be functioning as one, regardless of their real number. Performing nothing else. The same is valid for the customers' Control Panels, the FTP, etc.

3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) as well.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of an authentic cloud hosting accounts provider will support numerous data center locations on different continents.

Here's an example of a DNS of a true cloud hosting firm:

dns1.101hosting.com

dns2.101hosting.com

If such a DNS is provided by your hosting provider, it's not a guarantee that there is a cloud hosting environment in use, but you can absolutely be confident when you discern a Domain Name Server like the one beneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud hosting platform. This kind of DNS simply illustrates that the web hosting environment in use is one-server based. Perhaps it's cPanel. cPanel is a single-server hosting solution and holds a 98+ percent market share. In cPanel's case, a single server tackles all hosting services (web, electronic mail, DNS, databases, FTP, CP(s), website files, and so on).

Remote File Storage - The Distorted Description of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting solution is not limited exclusively to a remote file storage service, as lots of web hosting vendors wish it was. Unluckily for them, if that was the case, most of the file web hosting providers would have been referred to as cloud hosting ones long ago! They are not categorized as such, as they plainly deliver file web hosting solutions, not cloud hosting solutions. The file hosting platform seems indeed very plain, in comparison with the web hosting platform. The remote disk storage platform is not a cloud web hosting platform. It cannot be, since it's merely one tiny constituent of the whole cloud hosting platform. There's a lot more to be discovered in the cloud hosting platform: the hosting Control Panel cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the Domain Name Server cloud, the FTP cloud, the electronic mail cloud and... in the not too distant future, perchance a bunch of brand new clouds we currently don't know about will emerge out of nowhere.
